The Hopkins Tornado, 1881
A tornado crossed farms west of Hopkins, Missouri, on June twelfth, eighteen eighty-one. The surviving account follows the storm from the Lone Elm schoolhouse to the One Hundred and Two River, naming the people injured, the neighbor who died, and the records that still need to be found.
On the afternoon of June twelfth, eighteen eighty-one, a tornado moved across farms west of Hopkins in northern Nodaway County. The surviving account traces the storm path from the Lone Elm schoolhouse to the One Hundred and Two River, names the people injured, records the death of a neighbor, and identifies which records have survived and which still need to be found. This episode retells what the sources preserve, explains what those sources are, and marks the gaps where the record goes silent.
Methodology note. This episode retells an account preserved in historical sources.
